Creating Future Leaders for Ethiopian Youth Maariv (14-1-2009) This week, dozens of Ethiopian youths from Ramla and Be'er Ya'akov began training seminars focused on encouraging leadership development in the Ethiopian community. The Ethiopian community in Israel consist of 120,000 people, 60% of them are youth that live in the peripheral areas. Many of them suffer from absorption difficulties. The training seminars for fostering future leadership are expected to take place all over Israel, but the Ethiopian scout groups in Ramla and in Beer Yaakov were chosen as a special pilot project in order to examine the effectiveness of the educational program. The Citizens' Empowerment Center in Israel (CECI) initiated this training course, with the participation of members of the Knesset and local public figures. MK Eitan Cabel participated in yesterday's training seminar, and in the future, other MK's and businessmen are scheduled to participate. According to CECI's Executive Director, Yuval Lipkin, "Our goal is to empower the Ethiopian youths and provide them with the tools to establish a social-political leadership. We are focusing, in particular, on junior high students, by providing them with a series of meetings with public officials, including current leaders in the Ethiopian community. Appropriate representation of this population in the Knesset, and in the local authorities, is necessary for the their successful integration into Israeli society and for them to contribute to the State of Israel."
